The Free Lance-Star Photography Department shares the stories behind the photos.
A Giant Leap for Mankind?
“This is my first blog – my first “big step for mankind” where I will wax poetically about how I practice my profession of photojournalism for a medium-sized newspaper – The Free Lance-Star – located jut outside the pure madness south of the Washington, D.C. Standard Metropolitan Statistical Area.
I often thought my method of blogging was to offer my best images to the newspaper – or web site – and have the locals stop me on the street corner and tell me how much they liked or disliked (in equal number, thankfully) the pictures I took, . . . and that ran in the daily.
Now it’s time to place those extras in an on-line newsletter that will reach millions of readers.
This morning I visited Motts Run Reservoir, Fredericksburg city’s park and municipal water source in Spotsylvania County, to get some pictures of fishermen pulling dinner out of the lake. (The Free Lance-Star is doing an article on the mercury levels in the fish pulled from local water bodies.)
A couple of deer glanced at me while I drove in on the crushed-rock roadway. There was no other wildlife.
Nor were there any fishermen.
I arrived at 8 a.m. to see a mist floating off the water. The early morning light is as important as the evening light, both a valuable tool in a photographer’s bag.
A thin strand of cloud sat idle above the lake and it’s framework of trees with its leaves turning color for autumn.

An about-face revealed this scene:

I left Mott’s Run to head back to the office and caption a series of prints for another assignment, then off to Massaponax to photograph a business owner, then back to Motts Run to see if anyone was fishin’. Or catchin’.
Chancellor resident Dickie Musselman, who I will describe as a very avid fisherman, took me out on his boat so I could get some pictures of him fishing.
