About this blog: Discussing religion, spirituality and values. Amy Umble is the religion reporter for The Free Lance-Star.
Changes Are Afoot…
About three years ago, an editor gave me the religion beat. He handed me a wire story about different forms of prayer and asked me to find local angles. Aside from that, I had no idea how to cover faith. I was, in a word, terrified. After all, faith is one of the most important aspects of someone’s life, whether they believe in a religion or not. It is also one of the most intimate. Who would ever share these details with me?
Overwhelmingly, you readers have. Time and again, I have been so honored and touched by how you’ve let me in your lives. When accepting an award from the Religion Newswriters Association in September, I bragged about you guys. About how gracious you’ve been. And I said that covering religion is both a great privilege and a huge responsibility. I have felt that every single day on this beat. I cannot thank you enough.
And so I want to tell you that I am leaving the religion beat. I will be taking on the Spotsylvania County beat. So far, there are no plans for a dedicated religion reporter. But the editors assure me that they’re commitment to religion coverage stands strong. Many other reporters have already offered to do religion stories on top of their already full plates. And I imagine I’ll have a tough time giving this beat up and will be contributing some stories myself.
And I would ask you to one last time share your faith with me. One of my last projects is a collection of quotes from area residents and clergy on how faith can help you be grateful even in trying times. Got something to say? Please email me with your thoughts, your name, and–if you’d like–where you worship. My email is firstname.lastname@example.org.
Also, I’d like to tell you that this blog will continue. We’re still working out the details but please keep up with us.
