Politics, pop culture and the Godbeat
The Vatican reports its latest member of the flock: Homer Simpson.
A Jesuit priest has concluded that the family’s mealtime prayers and religious questions, among other considerations, prove their Catholicism.
The official Vatican newspaper has declared that beer-swilling, doughnut-loving Homer Simpson and son Bart are Catholics — and what’s more, it says that parents should not be afraid to let their children watch “the adventures of the little guys in yellow.”
Not so fast, said executive producer Al Jean. Yes, Homer and his mischievous son Bart talked about converting in an episode five years ago. But they remain Presbylutheran.
And the Godbeat is hopping with other religion news today, many focusing on politics:
- Sojourners blogs about 10 things to consider when voting in November. The list includes poverty, education, honesty, the environment and creating jobs.
- The Washington Post’s religion blog examines Christine O’Donnell’s claims that the Constitution doesn’t guarantee separation of church and state.
- Attack ads in Lexington, Ky. are questioning Rand Paul’s Christian beliefs.
